We were approached to design a preschool utilising an abandoned property sales gallery to accommodate 200 children aged from 18 months to 6 years old to be taught using a curriculum inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching and learning. As an alteration and addition to an abandoned sales gallery, several key design elements of the existing building were preserved while merging it with the new floor plan to give a new character to the building as an institution for the young children.
The spatial sequence demonstrates blurring of boundaries between play and learning through overlapping spaces between learning, playing and green spaces within the grid of the existing structure while ensuring the safety and security of the children. We sought to introduce the elements of nature through the interior architecture and design with emphasis on form, colour and texture. Natural materials such as wood, stone and plants are incorporated into design to help create a calming and nurturing environment. The classrooms are designed with a spacious, flexible layout and large opening to bring in plenty of natural light and enhance the indoor and outdoor experience within the classrooms.
